A Real Farmer's Market

Well things here in ‘host camp’ village have settled down.  Lori’s counterpart on the ladies side works during the week but can support host camper duties on the weekends.  My counterpart needs this weekend off to do a brake job and wants to go to the Hershey RV show next weekend (can someone tell me why this is better than the Big E show – other than its not winter!).  So Lori and I will be on opposing shifts. Really, the job is not that hard so it really does not matter that one of us will always be ‘no duty’.
Today we hit the Westport Farmers Market.  This is a refreshing change since the last couple of ‘farmers’ markets we’ve been to seem to more like craft fairs or church bizarres with no fresh fruits or veggies!  The Westport Farmers market had an entire row of farmers produce with the non-farm stuff in a different row.  We ended up getting apples, corn on the cob, tomatoes, and green beans.  I think we have veggies covered for the week and won’t have to hit the bagged stuff in the freezer!  After the farmers market it was a quick trip to my favorite supermarket – that’s right Lee’s! With the smaller refer/freezer package this seems to be needed about every fours day.  Or is it because we’re retired I can just wait until something runs out before we head for replacements and not worry about a coordinated attack on the supermarket.
This weekend is the Acushnet Apple-Peach festival at the Long Plain Museum.
This is a fair type atmosphere with vendors, food booths.  The local orchards also are well represented at this event.  Maybe because we got there at the end of the day but not a lot of orchards had peaches available, though some of the farm stands on the road to the event did.  Food vendors  at this event was sell at a surprisingly low cost – even for this area which is known for relatively inexpensive fair.  Lori had a cranberry chicken salad roll that she thought was terrific.  She also got some hand cut onion rings in a tempura batter.  Since I’m Portuguese I went for the Carne DeEspito – beef marinated primarily in red wine and garlic.  It was near perfect.  To make the Portuguese dinner complete I went with Favas – a large bean cooked in a tomato sauce with garlic, crushed red pepper flakes, and paprika.  Now that we’re full, it’s time to head back for a fire!
