On the Move Again
I know it’s been a couple of days since I posted last. Everything is O.K. it has been very busy. On Wednesday the NOAA weather set a Gale Watch for Assateague and then upgraded it to a warning. We decided to bring in the slides on the trailer, lock it up and then spend the night at a hotel in Ocean City. Thursday we were up early and headed out to Ocean City.
We had free passes from the Ocean City Visitors Center to the Life Saving Station in Ocean City. We figured we would save them for a rainy day and this one qualified. We have been to other stations, including the one in Westport, MA. Ocean City’s is by far the most comprehensive and informative. It also has a section on the history of the Ocean City beach and boardwalk. This is typically a $5 admission and worth the price. After that it was out to Fenwick Island, DE and the shipwreck museum but it was closed. We next stopped for hot chocolates at Dunkin Donuts and then headed to the Comfort Inn near Fifth St. and North Atlantic. This is a terrific facility, clean and well managed.
Since we would need to grab some supper I asked the manager and he recommended Coins Pub. This was an outstanding recommendation. The manager let us know that on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday Coins has an extensive half-price menu. He was right, plus they have daily specials and early bird specials – show up before 6 pm and a large portion of the menu is discounted – and the food is terrific.
Friday got off to a great start, the wind was dying down and the Comfort Inn serves hot breakfast. We made it back to Assateague and started getting the Flagstaff ready for the road and the Ram loaded up to travel. We took the opportunity to finally get an Assateague sunset in this trip. They are quite the sight.
Saturday we hit the road. Since I plan on about 250 miles a day I figured we would barely get out of Maryland since we had to do the up-and-around through Annapolis because Lori will not do tunnels. We actually made good time. Which is surprising since the GPS routed us through DC. We got to see the Lincoln and Washington Memorials (at a distance) and drove by the Pentagon. My plan is to drive until 2:30 pm and then look for a campground about an hour down the road. This will get us on sight and set up before sunset (which is pretty early this time of year). This time we found Pocahontas State Park just south of Richmond, VA. This is a very large park which has a huge day-use area with a lake and pool/water pad area.
Tomorrow it’s on the road again to Elgin AFB. We’ll see how far we get.
