Happy Easter from Assateague! The island is a lot cooler in April than it
is in October. Fortunately the camper
has heat. Right now I cannot charge the
battery or bring n AC power from my generator.
I think my 20-to-30 amp adapter has a short in it. We will be off to the parts store this morning
to buy a new one.
Walmart had the 20/30 adapter. Such a simple part can cause so much
inconvenience. I found a small leak on
the connection from my fresh water tank.
That is now tightened so we are up and running. Judging by how much more the heater ran,
Sunday night was much colder than Saturday night. We had a nice morning on the beach. Axel really enjoys the surf. Once we got him a little exercise it was off
in the truck to look for horses. We
found plenty of them; including the painted horses my wife likes so much,
feeding near the entrance. With the
bridge just ahead I’ve always wondered why they never cross to the mainland.
On Tuesday night the wind kicked up. I had to get out of bed to put a hurricane
strap on the awning. I ended up getting
out of bed a couple of times to store stuff that was getting blown around with
an increasing wind. Wednesday brought no
relief from the wind. While I was
dumping tanks into the tote for the dump station run, the wind caught the side
of my awning that did not have the hurricane strap. Fortunately the hurricane strapped side
prevented the awning from heading to the roof.
It did bend a rafter pole, however.
A trip to Home Depot for a dowel that I could feed into the rafter pole
made the fix. It’s not perfectly
straight but it works.
When we are n Maryland we like to get crab cakes. When we come in October we usually get them
at the Assateague Crab House. Because we
are here before Memorial Day the Crab House is not open. So we headed out to Rte 50 and Crabs To Go. Both Lori and I got the crab cake
dinners. We also got a side of hush
puppies with melted butter. We should
have gotten one meal for the two of us along with the hush puppies and an extra
side. Each meal came with two cakes that
were mostly crab meat. Each cake was a
meal in itself
We only managed to get the canoe into the water three times,
with one of them probably ill-advised.
We spent most of the week here with small craft advisories posted. On one canoe trip we were never more than four
feet from the boat launch and in no more than two feet of water. We fought the wind and white caps just to
stay out and watch a sunset in the bay.
This year was the first time we have left the island for
other than provisions. We went to a Maryland state park and campground and did a drive through the town of Snow Hill. There is a lot of
history in the area and maybe in subsequent years we will get to experience
it. It is quite a testament to the
National Seashore that in four years we have never felt a need to leave except
for provisions and the crab cake meal.
It is sad that we head back to work. Even though the weather was not ideal,
Assateague remains our favorite vacation spot.
